Who Appoints Dissertation Defense Opponents?

Usually, dissertation councils independently appoint 3 opponents who are members of the scientific community. However, the dissertator's opinion is also taken into account, he can influence this choice. This is necessary so that the opponents are people who really understand the issue raised. In order for the Discouncil to agree with the proposed candidates, they must meet a number of requirements.

Who can be chosen as an opponent:

  1. Opponent - a scientist, "behind" which there are scientific achievements and the necessary professional knowledge in the profile of dissertation research.

  2. The candidate will impartially assess the submitted research, identify its shortcomings.

  3. The scientist will determine the place and value of the research, for this he will compare it with the dissertations already defended in the designated field of science.

  4. The person who will act as an opponent will be able to adequately assess the professionalism and scientific literacy of the applicant for a scientific degree.

Who cannot be an opponent?

Whom to choose as an opponent? According to paragraph 22 of the "Regulations on the award of academic degrees", this may be a scientist who is not:

  • Minister of Education and Science;

  • supervisor or consultant of a graduate or doctoral student;

  • an employee of the company in which either the dissertation student or his supervisor /consultant works;

  • a member of the Higher Attestation Commission, an expert or dissertation council that accepts a scientific work for defense;

  • civil servants, due to whose professional activities a conflict of interest may arise, and the work will not be evaluated objectively.

Also, according to the "Regulations", one cannot choose as opponents those scientists who are employees of the same organization. The new version of the document states that these can be both working and non-employed candidates.

Review of the opponent for the dissertation

The result of the work of the opponent, who has familiarized himself with the text of the dissertation, abstract and other published works of the author provided to him within a certain period, is a review. It depends on him how the defense process will proceed and whether the applicant will receive the desired degree.

This document must contain the following information:

  • methodology and methodology of research;

  • scientific novelty of the research;

  • compliance of the submitted scientific work with the criteria for works of this type;

  • the practical significance of the conclusions and results presented in the text of the dissertation;

  • how relevant is the topic chosen by the dissertation student, how is it connected with the plan of the organization represented by the applicant;

  • the validity and reliability of all the provisions voiced in the dissertation, the appropriateness of the conclusions drawn and these recommendations, etc.
